Perfect Sense Energy is a UK-based specialist in commercial solar PV, helping businesses reduce energy costs and carbon emissions through smart, sustainable energy solutions.
Last month, the company proudly marked its 15-year anniversary – a milestone that reflects a decade and a half of organic growth, trusted client partnerships, and a commitment to quality.
To mark the occasion, we spoke to Founder and Managing Director, Gary Brandwood, about how the business has evolved, what’s shaping the commercial rooftop solar landscape today, and where Perfect Sense Energy is headed next.
When I started Perfect Sense Energy, it was with a simple mission: to help businesses reduce energy costs and their environmental footprint through smart, sustainable energy and carbon reduction solutions. Over the years, that mission has evolved alongside the business, and the energy landscape itself.
We began by focusing on energy efficiency, helping commercial clients lower consumption through LED lighting upgrades and energy reduction technologies. As the market shifted and solar PV matured into a reliable, mainstream and increasingly affordable option, we adapted.
Today, we are specialists in the design, supply, and installation of mid sized (250-1000kWP) commercial rooftop solar PV systems, supporting businesses across the UK to harness clean energy, reduce costs, and strengthen ESG credentials.
How the business has evolved
Perfect Sense Energy has grown steadily, not through taking on debt or selling equity, but organically through experience, trust, and delivering quality. We’ve developed long-standing relationships with clients across sectors (manufacturing, logistics, food production, education, retail, and commercial) who return to us because they know we do things properly. Our business has been built on referrals, word of mouth, and a solid reputation in the industry.
We’ve also matured internally. We’ve expanded our in-house technical capabilities, strengthened our supply chain relationships, and grown a team that understands how to deliver complex installations with minimal disruption. We’ve become more strategic and focused on long-term partnerships, not just installing kit on a roof.
The current landscape
Right now, the UK commercial rooftop market is both promising and challenging.
On the opportunity side:
Energy price volatility continues to drive demand for self-generated savings, de-risking energy cost budgets. Businesses are more motivated than ever to take control of their energy costs following the effect the Ukraine War has had on prices. Many businesses are paying 70% more for electricity than they were just 5 years ago.
ESG and net-zero commitments are more commonly board-level priorities. Rooftop solar PV is a visible, measurable step toward carbon reduction goals.
Technology has improved – we now see higher efficiency panels, better inverters, and more intelligent monitoring systems than ever before.
Costs have fallen – solar and battery storage are now a fraction of the cost they were 10 years ago, whilst energy costs have continued to rise
Finance options are becoming more flexible, with power purchase agreements (PPAs) and asset finance making solar accessible without heavy upfront capital.
But there are still real challenges:
Uncertainty in policy support – the UK government’s approach to solar incentives has been inconsistent over the years. While there is growing rhetoric around net zero, clear long-term support is currently lacking.
Grid connection delays and capacity limits are beginning to bite, especially in high-demand areas.
Rooftop constraints -many commercial buildings in the UK are older or leased, complicating structural suitability or landlord consent.
Decision-making timescales – some businesses are keen in principle, but slow to act, whether due to economic caution or internal bureaucracy.
The road ahead
We’re doubling down on what we do best – delivering well-designed, technically sound, and commercially viable solar PV systems. We’re also exploring more integrated energy solutions, combining solar with battery storage, monitoring, and demand management to provide a fuller picture of how businesses can take control of their energy.
We also continue to invest in our team, streamline operations often via integrated technology, and strengthening our commercial capability and experience so we can scale our impact while staying true to the personal, expert service that sets us apart. The next chapter is about smart growth, strategic partnerships, and helping more UK businesses unlock the full potential of commercial solar.
It’s an exciting time and we’re just getting started.
