AC off doesn’t mean DC dead

Magazine spread for "AC off doesn't mean DC dead", with a portrait of Tara Fisher of Gewiss, a photo of a grey rotary DC isolator switch, a diagram comparing how AC and DC behave when switched, and a safe electrical isolation sequence infographic.

In the October issue of Heat Pumps & Renewables Tara Fisher, Marketing Director at Gewiss, discusses why safe solar PV isolation starts with understanding the risks you can’t simply switch off.

Solar photovoltaic (PV) installations are now a familiar sight across the UK, from domestic rooftops to large commercial projects. That momentum is only set to grow: the UK Government’s Solar Roadmap sets out plans to radically increase solar deployment by 2030, while the proposed Future Homes Standard is expected to make rooftop solar the default for most new-build homes. As solar becomes more common, it becomes even more important to understand one of the key safety considerations in PV work: DC isolation.

Solar PV systems bring some challenges that are different from more familiar AC installations. The direct current generated by PV modules behaves in its own way, especially when it comes to isolation, fault conditions and switching.
