The rise of the integrated energy home: SOLARWATT’s vision for connected energy

Why sector coupling is shaping the future of residential energy and has been central to SOLARWATT’s approach for many years

For many years, SOLARWATT has championed a more connected approach to residential energy. Long before sector coupling became a mainstream industry discussion, we recognised that the greatest value for homeowners would come from intelligently connecting solar generation, battery storage, heating and electric mobility into a single energy ecosystem.

Today, as heat pumps, battery storage, electric vehicles and dynamic energy tariffs become increasingly mainstream, that vision is becoming reality.

The integrated energy home is no longer a future ambition. It is rapidly becoming the new standard for residential energy systems.

As electricity costs remain a key concern for homeowners, demand is growing for solutions that do more than simply generate renewable energy. Customers increasingly want technologies that work together seamlessly, helping them generate, store, manage and optimise energy across every aspect of their lives.

For installers, this shift presents a significant opportunity.

The conversation is no longer focused solely on solar panels, battery storage, heat pumps or EV charging. Instead, it is about how these technologies combine to create a connected energy ecosystem that delivers greater independence, resilience and long-term value.

At SOLARWATT, our theme for Solar & Storage Live 2026 is Power. Heat. Mobility. Together.

It reflects a market that is moving beyond individual products towards intelligent energy solutions that connect power generation, heating and mobility into one integrated system.

The evolution of the modern energy home

The pace of residential electrification continues to accelerate.

Heat pumps are replacing fossil fuel heating systems. Electric vehicle ownership continues to grow. Dynamic tariffs are changing how and when electricity is consumed. At the same time, homeowners are seeking ways to maximise self-generated solar energy and reduce their dependence on the grid.

As electric vehicles become an increasingly important part of the household energy mix, the role of intelligent EV charging is evolving too. EVs are no longer simply vehicles. They are becoming valuable energy assets capable of supporting a more flexible and connected home energy system.

Bringing these technologies together is at the heart of sector coupling.

Rather than operating independently, solar PV, battery storage, heating systems and electric vehicles can work together to intelligently balance generation, storage and consumption. The result is greater self-consumption, improved efficiency and a better homeowner experience.

For installers, the opportunity is clear. Customers increasingly want complete energy solutions rather than standalone technologies, creating opportunities to deliver higher-value projects designed around the whole home.

Battery storage as the enabler

At the centre of this connected energy ecosystem sits battery storage.

As the link between energy generation and consumption, storage enables homeowners to capture excess solar energy and use it when it delivers the greatest value. It also plays a crucial role in supporting more advanced applications, including dynamic tariffs, electric vehicle charging and future Vehicle-to-Home opportunities.

This is where the next-generation SOLARWATT Battery vision 2.0 comes in.

Developed through SOLARWATT’s long-standing collaboration with BMW, Battery vision 2.0 has been designed to support the increasingly dynamic demands of the modern energy home. The distinctive design was created in partnership with BMW subsidiary Designworks USA, while SOLARWATT and BMW also worked closely on the development and selection of system components.

Compared with the previous generation, Battery vision 2.0 delivers 42% more usable storage capacity while maintaining virtually the same footprint, giving homeowners more flexibility without sacrificing valuable space. Capacity per module has increased from 2.6 kWh to 4.3 kWh, significantly improving overall storage potential and system economics.

The benefits for installers and homeowners include:

  • 42% more usable storage capacity in virtually the same footprint.
  • Flexible modular storage from 8.6 kWh to 25.9 kWh per battery tower, allowing solutions to be tailored to different property sizes and energy demands.
  • More than 50 kWh of storage capacity on a single inverter when paired with SOLARWATT Inverter vision max.
  • Designed for future energy use cases, including Vehicle-to-Home integration, dynamic electricity tariffs and participation in flexibility markets.
  • Guaranteed energy throughput of 22 MWh per battery pack, reflecting the durability and long-term performance required for the next generation of home energy systems.

Designed as part of a complete SOLARWATT ecosystem, Battery vision 2.0 supports not only solar self-consumption but also the wider integration of power, heat and mobility. The system has been engineered around the increasingly dynamic charging and discharging requirements created by solar generation, battery optimisation, electric vehicles and future energy services.

The intelligence behind the integrated energy home

Hardware alone does not create an integrated energy system.

As homes become increasingly electrified, with solar generation, battery storage, heat pumps, EV charging and dynamic tariffs all working alongside one another, intelligent energy management becomes essential.

This is where the SOLARWATT Manager plays a critical role.

Acting as the brain of the energy system, the SOLARWATT Manager continuously analyses energy generation, consumption, battery storage levels and electricity pricing data to optimise how energy is used throughout the home. Rather than treating each technology as a standalone product, it enables them to work together as one connected ecosystem.

The system automatically coordinates energy flows across the home, helping homeowners maximise self-consumption of solar energy, intelligently charge and discharge battery storage, optimise EV charging, support heating demand and take advantage of dynamic electricity tariffs.

By making thousands of energy decisions in the background, the SOLARWATT Manager helps ensure that solar energy is used where it delivers the greatest value, whether that is powering the home, charging an electric vehicle, heating water or storing energy for later use.

For installers, this intelligence is what transforms a collection of technologies into a genuine sector-coupled energy solution. It allows homeowners to benefit from greater energy independence, lower running costs and a seamless user experience, while helping future-proof systems as new technologies and energy services emerge.

Together, the SOLARWATT Manager and Battery vision 2.0 provide the foundation for the integrated energy home, connecting power generation, storage, heating and mobility into a single intelligent system.

From individual products to integrated energy systems

The future of residential energy is not about individual technologies. It is about connecting them.

As homeowners invest in solar, battery storage, heat pumps and electric vehicles, they expect these technologies to work together seamlessly. The homes that deliver the greatest value will be those capable of intelligently managing energy flows between generation, storage, heating and mobility.

With Battery vision 2.0 providing flexible energy storage and the SOLARWATT Manager orchestrating how that energy is used, homeowners can maximise self-consumption, reduce grid dependency and prepare for future energy services as they emerge.

For installers, this presents an opportunity to move beyond individual product sales and deliver complete energy systems designed around a customer’s long-term energy needs.

The concept of sector coupling has been discussed for many years. What is changing now is that technology, customer demand and market conditions are aligning to make it mainstream.

The integrated energy home is no longer a future ambition.

It is today’s reality.
