Go Geothermal marks 20 years in UK renewable heating, with sights set on bigger projects ahead

Go Geothermal, marks 20 years in business this October. The milestone lands alongside a renewed push into larger commercial and housing developments and continued growth of the company’s UK stock and training capacity.

The company was founded in 2006 by Tim Williams and Sean Sowden, built on the belief that heat pumps should be a genuine option for UK homes and businesses, not a niche technology. Go Geothermal has stayed at the front of that shift ever since, a path that led to its acquisition by the NIBE Group in 2021. The five years since have given the company access to NIBE’s full manufacturing portfolio, putting a range of heat pump technology behind it that few UK suppliers can match.

The business grew from a bedroom and a garage into a single warehouse in Chilton, County Durham, then a Midlands commercial office in East Drayton, before relocating its headquarters to Newton Aycliffe. A further expansion in 2023 and 2024 tripled the company’s stock capacity to £1.6 million and opened a larger Midlands base in Retford, a 2,600 sq ft facility with its own dedicated training room.

The anniversary also marks a change in leadership. Co-founder Sean Sowden retired earlier this year after two decades running the business alongside Tim Williams, who continues to lead the company forward.

“Twenty years on, we’re still the business we set out to be: technology-led, service-driven, UK-based, and run by people who genuinely believe in this technology. Sean and I started this in a bedroom and a garage, and I’m proud of what it’s grown into. The next twenty years are about taking that same approach into bigger projects, without losing what made it work in the first place,” said Tim Williams, co-founder of Go Geothermal.

That next chapter includes a push into larger commercial and housing developments. Mark Burton joined Go Geothermal this year as Sales & Strategy Director, bringing experience across new build, retrofit, social housing and commercial heat pumps from previous roles at Vaillant and Dimplex.

“There’s a genuine opportunity to build something significant in the commercial and housing space,” said Mark Burton, Sales & Strategy Director at Go Geothermal.

The anniversary lands at a strong moment for the sector. UK heat pump installations hit a record 60,000+ MCS-certified installs in 2025, up 34% on the year before, as the government works toward a target of 450,000 installs a year by 2030 and the Future Homes Standard takes effect from March 2027.

Go Geothermal is marking the milestone itself with a month of celebrations for its installer network, running through October and November under the banner ‘20 Years. Still going Geo.’ The campaign includes anniversary goodie bags for installers coming through training, free commissioning for installers new to Go Geo, new CTC van wrap and web design assets, and a Big Anniversary Mystery Prize reveal in October.
